Carnitas Uruapan Restaurant – I recommend the pork, since that’s all they serve. On weekends they do have really good cactus salad and menudo (if you’re brave enough), but you’re going for the pork, and dear sweet, salty, savory food gods it’s worth the trip to Pilsen, Chicago’s most recent up-in-coming neighborhood. This place has a menu with a picture of a pig sectioned into cuts of meat. For a paltry sum you can get a pile of said sectioned pig. The atmosphere is exactly what you’d expect from an authentic Mexican restaurant, a.k.a. no mariachi bands or flamboyantly decadent walls. It’s tight and very simple. English isn’t easily understood here either, so it’s nice to be able to point and order by the pound. With every order of pork comes tortillas, salsas, onion, cilantro and other Western Mexican street fare fixings, so expect your table and your stomach to fill up.
