Situated in the heart of Los Angeles, the La Brea Tar Pits are a cluster of tar pits, in which natural asphalt has seeped from the ground for tens of thousands of years. Over the course of many centuries, prehistoric animals have been trapped in the pits, such as mammoths, wolves, bears, sloths, and saber-toothed cats. On-site is the George C. Page Museum, which is dedicated to the research of the tar pits and to displaying the many animal specimens found there.
