It might sound strange for me to recommend a prison, but Eastern State Penitentiary is one of the most historic prisons in the entire country. Dating back to 1829, the prison was revolutionary when it opened, and many of the prison’s design elements have since be incorporated into nearly every prison in the world.
Inside, you can not only learn about the prison and what life was like during its 140 years of operation, but you can also learn about prisoners who escaped from Eastern State and its most famous inmate: Al Capone.
