Why should we visit Boston?
It’s rare to find a buzzing metropolis that also boast a cozy, welcoming vibe. Boston has managed to find a beautiful balance between chaos and calm; historical and new; young and old. The prime harbor-side location makes the city not only wonderfully scenic, but easily accessible to those traveling along the east coast. Boston’s palpable energy is manifested in its young local crowd, brought about by one of the most famous university hubs and cultural melting pots in the world.
Sometimes giant cities can be overwhelming. Boston is big, but can be quickly navigated by a simple public transportation system. It easily links locals and travelers alike to a rainbow of culinary delights, artistic pursuits, sporting events, concerts and sprawling outdoor spaces.
I love getting wrapped up in the passion of Boston, whether it be discussing where to get the best, fresh seafood or where the perfect seats are in Fenway Park to watch the Red Sox play!
Local Customs:
Boston a very young town with lots of energy. If you’re looking for lots of outdoor activities, like kayaking on the Charles River, plan to visit in the late spring or summer. People tend to hibernate more during the long, cold winter, but that also has its charm. There’s a lively skating, pub-going and shopping culture even as the snow falls. Boston also boasts many discounts and free things to do because of the colleges, so it can be a great place to do on the cheap.
Be wary of commenting on outside sports teams. Bostonians are friendly but some of the most aggressive and fiercely loyal people when it comes to sports. You might think it funny to wear a Yankees cap, but you DEFINITELY will get heckled!
Where do the locals hang out?
Boston is diverse, but each neighborhood has a great flavor. Southie or South Boston is a fantastic community for the brunchers and young professional crowd who love to mingle. Those just out of school migrate to Brighton and Brookline to frequent the trendy, low-key bars and coffee shops. Somerville has a modest yet bright art and music scene that hipsters cherish. The Sound End and Back Bay is ritzy, beautiful and flashy. Suits are found in the financial district and sometimes float through neighboring Fort Point for fun after work too.
In the middle of all this is the sprawling Boston Common, which can be a great base downtown. Similar to Central Park, it’s a large green space home to swan boat rides on Frog Pond, ultimate Frisbee games, and outdoor performances.
